Song Lyric Sunday: Comparisons

Welcome to the first Song Lyric Sunday at the Sandman’s new home. Jim, our host with the most has given comparisons as the theme of the day, so head over to his page for a fuller explanation of the set up.

My two song choices are two big band duet numbers looking at close friendship.

First up is “Two of a Kind” by Bobby Darin and  singer/songwriter Johnny Mercer.

Two of a kind
For your information
We’re two of a kind

Two of a kind
It’s my observation
We’re two of a kind

Like peas in a pod
And birds of a feather
Alone or together you’ll find
That we are two of a kind

What’s so wrong thinkin’ life is a song and reachin’ for a star
And who’s to say if we’ll go the whole way – at least we got this far
Sharin’ our lot, our vittles and viands, we’re two of an ilk
Say, what if we’ve got rare Chateaubriands or crackers and milk

Makin’ it plain
Explainin’ it fully
We’re simila-la-larly inclined
Because we’re two of a kind

Two of a kind
When he’s out of rhythm, I’m singin’ off key
(I never heard ya do that, John)
Say, never you mind, cause I’m stickin’ with ‘im, to C above C
(He’s-a for me)
Oh, need we explain
When he warbles sweetly, I’m flat and completely behind
Because we’re two of a kind

I get kicks when I meet the cute chicks who hang around this lad
And especially when they whisper to me, “Hey, honey, who’s your dad?”

Two of a sort
Like two pomegranates from off the same tree
I’m with ya sport, whatever you plan it’s-a goes double with me
(It’s-a goes double with you, huh?) (Yeah!)
Yeah, I got a terrible thought
Most frightfully upsetting
And yet we are getting resigned
To being two of a kind

We’re two of a kind
We like workin’ single
Or workin’ in twos
Keep us in mind, give us a jingle, we’ve got taps on our shoes
(We’ll dance!)
We’re both of us like, the Tower of Pisa
I’m-a lean-a like he’s-a inclined
Because we’re two of a kind
Because we’re
Two of a kind

Written by Johnny Mercer and Bobby Darin

Second number is by Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr and is called “Me and my Shadow”

Like the wallpaper sticks to the wall
Like the seashore clings to the sea
Like you’ll never get rid of your shadow
Frank, you’ll never get rid of me
Let all the others fight and fuss
Whatever happens, we’ve got us.
Me and my shadow
We’re closer than pages that stick in a book
We’re closer than ripples that play in a brook
Strolling down the avenue
Wherever you find him, you’ll find me, just look
Closer than a miser or the bloodhound’s to Liza
Me and my shadow
We’re closer than smog when it clings to L.A.
We’re closer than Bobby is to J.F.K.
Not a soul can bust this team in two
We stick together like glue
And when it’s sleeping time
That’s when we rise
We start to swing
Swing to the skies
Our clocks don’t chimeWhat a surprise
They ring-a-ding-ding!
Happy New Year!
Me and my shadow
And now to repeat what I said at the start
They’ll need a large crowbar to break us apart
We’re alone but far from blue
Before we get finished, we’ll make the town roar
We’ll make all the late spots, and then a few more
We’ll wind up at Jilly’s right after Toot’s Shore
Life is gonna be we-wow-whee!
(Here comes the party!)
For my shadow and me!
Say Frank?
What is it, Sam?
Do me a favor?
What do you want, now?
Would you mind taking it, just one more time?
From the top?
No! From the ending!
Wonderful!
And while we are swinging, to mention a few
We’ll drop in at Danny’s, The Little Club too
But wind up at Jilly’s, whatever we do
Life is gonna be we-wow-whee!
(Wow!)
For my shadow and me!
Frank?
Oh, forget it Sam.

While the songs have similar themes,  “Two of a Kind” is very much focused on camaraderie and has a feeling of two friends gently taking the piss out of one another, whereas “Me and my Shadow” has something more of an egotistical boasting feeling about it.

  1. I like the new background on your site Sandman. I didn’t know the Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer song, but it is really nice. I am familiar with Me and my Shadow and I like the friendship connection that you pointed out between these songs.
